Beyond Technique Where Style Becomes a By-Product of Presence

One of the most common questions artists arrive with is, “How do I find my style?” It is a question shaped by modern expectations, by social media, by visibility, and by the pressure to be recognisable. Yet this idea, as it is often understood, can quietly limit creative growth.

At Soulful Art Retreats in France, we take a different approach.

Rather than asking you to define your style, you are guided to deepen your way of seeing. Authentic style is not something you decide and repeat. It is something that emerges over time through perception, experience, and inner awareness.

When artists attempt to fix themselves into a recognisable aesthetic too early, the work often becomes predictable. It may appear consistent, but it loses its vitality. The creative process shifts from discovery into repetition, and this is where many artists begin to feel disconnected from their own work.

In contrast, when you remain open, curious, and attentive, something far more meaningful begins to develop. Your work begins to carry a quiet coherence, not because it looks the same, but because it comes from the same depth of perception.

This is where serious art meets inner transformation.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

Pablo Picasso

'Art offers us so many opportunities to view our world from a different more soulful perspective.'

What You Will Experience: A Week of Soulful Rhythm, each day is designed to balance structure and spaciousness:

Mornings

  • Gentle yoga and meditation
  • Grounding practices to awaken the body and mind

Late Morning / Afternoon

  • Guided art sessions to improve skill and technique
  • Techniques in painting, composition, colour theory and mindful observation
  • Time to explore your own creative expression, and to understand your create archetype

Evenings

  • Reflective practices or quiet integration
  • Nourishing plant-based meals
  • Space to rest, journal, or simply be

Throughout the week, you will be invited to see differently, to notice the subtle beauty of light, texture, and form in nature, and to bring that awareness into your artwork.

During the retreat, the focus rests on two essential aspects of artistic development.

The first is inner awareness. Through meditation, yoga, and guided observation, you begin to slow down and reconnect with your sensory experience. You become more attuned to light, form, movement, and emotion, not as abstract ideas, but as lived experience.

The second is technical skill. You are guided through practical elements of painting, including composition, tonal value, colour relationships, and confident mark making. These are not restrictive rules, but tools that allow your inner vision to take form.

Without skill, expression remains internal. Without awareness, skill becomes mechanical.

It is the integration of both that allows your work to become authentic, alive, and evolving.

You may find yourself working across different subjects, experimenting with new approaches, or stepping away from the need to complete everything you begin. This is not a lack of discipline, but a return to curiosity, which sits at the heart of meaningful creative practice.

Over time, something deeper begins to unify your work. Not a fixed style, but a consistent essence.

This is the space cultivated within these art and yoga retreats in France, a space where you are not asked to perform or define yourself, but to observe, explore, and develop both your skill and your perception.

Your role as an artist is not to arrive at a final identity. It is to remain attentive, responsive, and open to change. From that place, your work will naturally evolve.

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”

Vincent Van Gogh

Finding Your Creative Voice Workshop

A Peaceful Rural Retreat Setting

The retreat is held in a beautifully renovated 200-year-old Charentais farmhouse, set within a quiet hamlet in the heart of the South West French countryside.

Surrounded by open landscapes, soft rolling fields, and ever-changing natural light, this peaceful setting offers the ideal environment for both creative focus and deep rest. Away from the pace and distraction of modern life, the atmosphere here is naturally calming, allowing the mind to settle and the senses to awaken.

The farmhouse itself has been thoughtfully restored, blending rustic character with understated comfort. Private, beautifully decorated bedrooms provide a quiet space to retreat, reflect, and restore between sessions.

Throughout the week, the grounds become an extension of the studio. Painting takes place both outdoors in nature and within the artist’s private studio space, allowing you to move between observation and focused practice. The surrounding countryside offers endless inspiration, from shifting light across the fields to the textures and colours of the rural landscape.

In the warmer months, long summer days and golden evenings create a sense of openness and ease. In cooler moments, the warmth of a wood-burning fire brings a feeling of grounding and comfort, adding to the deeply nurturing atmosphere of the retreat.

With walks directly from the house, nearby villages, and traditional French châteaux within easy reach, the location offers both tranquillity and a quiet sense of cultural richness.

This is more than a place to stay. It is a space to slow down, to breathe, and to reconnect with both your creativity and the natural world.

The environment itself becomes part of the experience,  inspiring your creativity and supporting deep rest.

Nourishment: Plant-Based, Healing Food

Food is an essential part of the retreat experience.

You will be served nourishing plant-based meals, designed to:

  • Support energy and clarity
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Complement the creative and meditative practices

Meals are simple, grounding, and prepared with care.

Meet Your Teacher

Soulful Art Retreats France

With over 25 years of dedicated practice, Tandy Pengelly brings a rare depth of experience that bridges professional art, yoga, and inner work.

She is an internationally recognised oil painter, known for her atmospheric, expressive work inspired by the natural world and the strength of feminine energy. Her paintings explore light, movement, and emotional depth, and form the foundation of her approach to teaching.

Alongside her work as an artist, she is an experienced and highly trained yoga teacher, with decades of study in yoga, meditation, and embodied awareness. Her teaching is informed by a deep understanding of the body, breath, and nervous system, allowing her to guide students into a state of presence where both creativity and learning can unfold more naturally.

Her professional background also includes working as an artist coach and mentor, supporting a wide range of students, including neurodivergent creatives, to develop both their technical skills and their confidence. This experience has shaped a teaching approach that is both structured and intuitive, combining clear guidance with space for individual exploration.

At the heart of her work is a unique method that integrates technical painting skills with inner awareness. Rather than focusing solely on outcome, her teaching invites you to develop how you see, how you feel, and how you express.

You are guided not only in composition, colour, and technique, but in reconnecting with your own perception and creative voice.

This is where serious art meets inner transformation.

Within the retreat setting, her role is not simply to teach, but to hold a space where both artistic development and personal insight can emerge with depth, clarity, and authenticity.

You will be supported to grow your skills, refine your eye, and reconnect with your own unique expression in a way that feels grounded, expansive, and sustainable.
